I have a film of Nicola Davies reading the poem 'The Day The War Came' and was thinking it would make an interesting trailer with a rotoscoped animated illustration over top. it would be more than a trailer as it is a reading of the poem and may not work for a trailer for the theater production.
An interesting animated trailers for the Complicite theatre production Lionboy.
Chairs obviously feature a lot in the poem and will play a massive part of the play. I wanted to start exploring ways of drawing chairs, These are the first of many!
Having discussed the idea of making three 3-6 second animated teasers for use on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook in my last blog post(Check it out here.) I thought the best thing to do was to make a quick test animation with a really simple concept, that could potentially be used as a teaser.
I thought a hand holding something, which opens up to reveal a small chair would be interesting enough to hint at what the production is about. so I did this quick storyboard.
I then Filmed my hand opening, I thought this would be the quickest way to animate the hand and I really like the jumpy effect it has on animation.
At this point, I started thinking about the colour scheme which is hard at the moment because the theatre production is yet to have a rehearsal and nothing has been decided yet. I put together a simple colour scheme that included pink, brown and yellow with the text being a bright blue.
I then animated it Photoshop.
I think the test was succefull, there is something quite charming about the rotascoped animation. This was only a test and by no means the final version although I think it was usefull to see what could be possible.
I recently saw the animated teasers illustrator Robert Hunter released for his books on Instagram. These teasers were perfect for a platform like Instagram! but could also work on Facebook and Twitter, they were short from 3-7 seconds and looped, They had sound (although not sure this is needed) and they brought the books to life. I thought it would be awesome to do a similar thing for 3000 Chairs, a selection of maybe 3 short looping animation that could be posted on the build up to the date of the show.
The animation for these two teasers is way beyond what I could achieve in the short space of time I have for this module so I will have to come up with a way to make the process quicker, maybe rotoscoping or some kind of stop motion.
I have done small animated GIFs in the past which are rather rough but have a homemade quality that I like. These can be done prety quickly too.
These animated GIFs are obviously much simpler than the teaser might be but having done these I am confident that I can produce about three 3-7 second teasers for 3000 Chairs.
Some very rough and ealry character studies.
These studies are very early and rough but are a good starting point.
